Industry leader. Transformational innovator. Champion of social justice. Christopher Chen, M.D. is leading a healthcare revolution through the family-owned company that bears his name.
Dr. Chen is the Chief Executive Officer of ChenMed; a physician-led healthcare practice that is changing the lives of low- and moderate-income seniors managing multiple, complex conditions through a concierge-style, value-based care model that produces 30-50 percent fewer hospitalizations compared to standard primary care.
Since becoming ChenMed’s CEO in 2009, Dr. Chen has been on a quest to turn ChenMed into America’s leading primary care provider, transforming care of the neediest populations. He has created a highly scalable, technology-driven approach, and has grown the company more than 30 percent per year. Today, ChenMed boasts more than 75 medical centers in 10 states.
ChenMed’s innovative approach fixes the perverse incentives of fee-for-service to align with patient well-being by taking prospective payment and full accountability for the quality, service, and total cost of care. The care model focuses on prevention, wellness, accountability, and reducing negative variability.
This approach has earned praise from the White House, the Department of Health and Human Services, the U.K. National Health System, and publications such as Modern Healthcare, Health Affairs, Forbes, and The Economist. In addition, Medical Economics named ChenMed “Best Primary Care System in the U.S.,” and Fortune listed ChenMed as the only health care delivery organization on its 2020 list of companies that are “changing the world.”
Brought up in South Florida, Dr. Chen graduated from the University of Miami’s Honors Program in Medicine. He went on to complete his medical training at Beth Israel Deaconess, a Harvard University teaching hospital, after which he completed a fellowship in cardiology at Cornell University Medical College in Manhattan, New York. A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Chen sees patients at the company’s Miami Gardens, Florida medical center.
